The tower’s origins go back to the mid-13ᵗᴴ century and, together with the houses overlooking Piazza Castello, is the only remnant of the former castle. It rests on a 7 metre tall tapering square base, topped by the 15 metre tall octagonal tower proper which is joined to the base by four smaller triangular pyramids. The turret is surrounded by a recently reconstructed parapet resting on stone columns of unusual design. The cross-vaulted turret roof supports a small secondary octagonal turret which houses the bells which sound the hours of the clock. Near the entrance to the tower are the arms of the Farnese family, former overlords of Marta.
